lol. that was one of my math probs today. i just put when A = B

ooh forgot it was friday and time for another riddle (quick and easy one tongue.gif)


At the local pub, 2 fathers and 2 sons walk in and they sit down to enjoy a tasty pint of beer each. Between them they drank exactly 3 pints. Each person drank 1 pint.

How?

ok, now that i got the answer up there first i'll go ahead and clarify now. the first father is the second fathers father, which makes the second father a father and son. so there is two fathers and one son. then there is the second fathers son. but nobody got drunk in the making of this math problem cause they only drank one pint each.

I did horrible probability in College

If one of 3 boxes contains fun, that means that each box has 33.33% chance of having fun

so to summarise
Box 1 = 33.33%
Box 2 = 33.33%
Box 3 = 33.33%

But wait.. monkey opens Box 3 and laughs in your face saying what now?

Box 1 still has 33.33% chance of having fun smile.gif however
Box 2 is now 66.66% chance of having goodies inside smile.gif why? here's the tricky semantics tongue.gif

Box 1 has a 33.33% chance of having goodies, which means that there is a 66.66% chance of goodies NOT being in there..
So when Box 2 and 3 where there, the probability of fun NOT being in box 1 was 66.66% split two ways into box 2 and 3...
but since box 3 is taken away smile.gif then that 66.66% chance of NOT being in box 1 and being in box 2 and 3, can now be interrupted as a 66.66% chance of fun being in box 2 alone.

I remember this, did it ages ago.
If, 10X (= 9.999999) - X (= .999999) = 9X (= 9)

Therefore X = 1

How can you not follow that? Its just a simple subtraction equation consiting of two constituents which prove that .9 reccuring is another way of writting 1, so there tongue.gif

If you start with 10X represented by the number 9.999999 and subtract 1X represented by .999999 you end up with 9X represented by the number 9. Therefore 1X = 1

If you don't follow that then you are PROPERLY RETARDED!

Apologies, I have a mild perpensity for OCD and therefore must make comment biggrin.gif

Firstly only .99 RECURRING = 1
The notation should be a dot above the recurring number, but that can't be displayed in the forums, so I'll use the word 'recurring' instead tongue.gif

Easy Factorisation:

x = .99 recurring


10x = 9.99 recurring
10x - x = 9.99 recurring - x
9x = 9.99 recurring - .99 recurring
9x = 9

x = 1

so .99 recurring = 1

I think the above is straight forward enough to not require an explanation (so shut it 5 tongue.gif)
