Full Version: Ban appeal

Logic
Hi there. During a game yesterday, I was running out of spawn along with a few team mates and I stopped for a split second to adjust my volume. Consequently, a team mate behind decided to kick me. Now, I admit I intentionally team attacked the person who kicked me out of the way, ONCE (which he blocked thus losing minimal health) and did not persist in attacking him any further, proceeding to the objective. About 5 seconds later I receive a message informing me that I have a week ban for team killing handed out to me from Zeripper.

Now as I say, I did intentionally hit this team mate and I admit my fault, however a week ban seems a little heavy handed for hitting someone once? So I took to your rules and read over them. It says that bans are handed out for intentionally team killing (depending on severity) and I feel the length of my ban doesn't reflect the severity of the broken rule, and so here are my reasons for asking for the ban to be lifted/reduced in length:

I didn't kill them, I team attacked in retaliation (they were in fact in breach of the rules themselves, unfortunately I didn't catch their name because I didn't think it would escalate so quickly to a ban)

It was one swing, not a prolonged attack, I wasn't out to intentionally team kill them and disrupt the game

This is not an ongoing thing, I always attempt to play the game properly and never intentionally TK, I'm also the first to apologise if I accidentally TK. I'm sure my track record is clean, I have been away from the game for a long time.

I received no warning from admin and have never been warned by an admin on any separate occasions before. No prior kick, simply slapped with a full week ban for something not so severe.

Thanks and I hope this can be resolved! (And sorry for the bland formatting, using phone)

When you join the server a screen will pop up highlighting the two main rules, you join and play on our server you agree on these rules. So you saying you didn't receive a warning whatsoever isn't a valid nor a solid point.

Slower internet connection means those messages in the box load super slow, I click x on that box before anything loads so I actually didn't see that. Saying that is like saying "well, it's in the small print" it's really hard to miss... In my many years of competitive PC gaming and having my own share of admin rights on different games, a good admin will ALWAYS warn you first unless you're being racist/sexist etc. Regardless, I feel my point is being missed here.

I didn't team KILL. The rules state no intentional team killing. I didn't kill anyone, I team attacked one time in retaliation to someone else who was breaking the rule; should I have attacked them? No. But I did and I do regret it.. Were they punished too I wonder? Or just me who has owned the game since early access and never been banned from anywhere else before, seems slightly unjust, I am not a troll. I am at fault as I have admitted, but I'm trying to argue that I have a clean record here, it's not a habit of mine.. And it would seem bans are lifted from others who have done more severe things, unprovoked as well as team killing multiple people during a match on purpose. Basically my main point of argument is that in your rules you state:

Kicks/Bans for intentional TK's (depending on severity)

They key part being the bit in brackets about severity. While at fault, swinging once at a teammate I feel doesn't warrant an entire week ban, especially for a first time offender (I sound like an attorney here lool).

I'm a returning player to this community from early access as I stated before, who left because of the number of exploits and use of bugs.. It would be a real shame to drive people away again because of extremely harsh penalties for misdemeanours such as this. I totally would understand if I received a kick, a warning, even a days ban, but a week? I've already learnt my lesson and it's been less than 24 hours.

I feel as I've said enough now. Is there any chance I can have this ban lifted or reduced?
Bucket
Fair enough, but I was only commenting regarding of the 'no warning' being issued simply because we have many people coming here for appeals saying the same exact thing over and over again. It isn't our fault nor our problem that your internet speed is too slow to load up an image.

'' I click x on that box before anything loads so I actually didn't see that. Saying that is like saying "well, it's in the small print" it's really hard to miss.'' Except it isn't hard to miss, you simply close it rather than giving it a second or two to load up. Blame yourself not us for not getting a warning.

''especially for a first time offender (I sound like an attorney here lool).'' Doesn't mean you suddenly won't be treated as anyone else.

Also it is possible that when you were alt tabbed your character ingame was blocking the way, so someone kept kicking you to the side where you wouldn't block anyone?

Zeripper will handle this appeal since he is the one who issued the ban.

AsDeR
I don't see any remorse. Only "It's not fair when it happens to me!" "I don't deserve it!" "You are bad admins!"
If I was Zeripper I wouldn't lift the ban.

You play on our server, you comply to the rules. As easy as that. You don't sound like you learnt anything from this.
Zeripper
Hi,

Let me just start with this. No, I don't warn anymore. As Bucket has said, everyone gets a warning when they join. In a perfect world that wouldn't have to suffice, yet nowadays it just has to.

I used to just kick people for what you've done. But it really feels like trying to empty the see of trolls (not that you're one) with a glass. So as time goes on, I take a bigger and bigger container. Went from a kick to 1hour ban, then 24hrs, now 1 week. I know someday the spirit of Porsuk will be strong in me and I'll permaban on the spot tongue.gif

Not that it has anything to do with you, but last night, I logged on to play, and in the first 10 minutes had to stop and spectate because spawns were a mess, and banned 5 people for teamdamaging/teamkicking. That's a fucking lot in 10 minutes. That's just to show you the scope of our "work". I spectate half the time I spend on the server.

The other reason I don't kick people as of last week, is that they invariably come back and complain, or try to justify themselves, and I get to once again stop playing just to explain what's stated on the welcome screen. When you ban someone for a day or a week, you don't get that tongue.gif . They come to the forum, or add me on steam and we can do the explaining in a more relaxed way, as I'm doing right now.

You may very well feel like it's unfair to get banned a week for losing your cool once. It happens to most once in a while, and I myself have had my fair share of "Oh shit I'm not in the attacking team this time" moments.
I'll agree it is unfair, yet I'd like you and whoever reads this to understand our side of why this server's rules are so strict. This is what makes it the best server, IMO, for players who want to play the game without an asshole kicking them in spawn every time, or fucking maas (pet peeve of mine) who think it's fun to firepot teammates, and on the official servers get away with it every time.

I don't try to analyse situations anymore. I see someone kick/hit a friendly in what cannot be accidental, I ban. It's not how I'd like to do, but it's how I feel I get to get ahead of the number of real douchebags. Your kind of TD is collateral in this.

Just because you came here and were civil, I'll unban you as soon as you provide your steam profile (and what nick you were using at the time).

Remember when you get harassed by another player, just
a ) start a vote
b ) tell an admin (preferably in steam chat so the offender doesn't know he's going to be on the radar) - remember the admin can't take you on your word, best he can do is go spectator and see if any abuse happens from that moment on.
c ) record the action (if you have an nvidia like I do, you can have a shortkey to record up to 10 minutes of PAST gameplay. Served me as no other method have)
d ) if all else fails, just suck it up.

PS : it doesn't really matter if it's TD or TK, and if I wrote one instead of the other it's because it's fucking long to write the explanation in console while hoping I don't get killed, and the number of sentences in memory is too short, so I get the closest one tongue.gif

Thanks for the prompt replies by the way Bucket. RE the "first time offender" thing, I just meant that the ban feels heavy handed since I haven't done anything disruptive before, that is all.

And nah I didn't even alt tab out, I was reaching over to turn up the monitor volume on my sound card itself, it only took a second. It was in a wide open area near spawn, if I was blocking then I'd understand being kicked out of the way.

As for your response, AsDeR, they are your words not mine, I haven't accused any admins of being bad, I'm disrespecting nobody here. I actually admitted to everything I've done, also saying I'd totally understand a kick or a short ban, it's just a week ban seems excessive. And I did say I've learned my lesson and it hasn't even been 24 hours, if I didn't care I wouldn't be here trying to get my ban lifted.

I'm not saying I shouldn't be treated like everyone else. I'm just asking for a second chance. I'm now familiar with all rules and I'm not a toxic player; I won't intentionally team attack again.
Logic
Sorry, posted that before I saw your rather in-depth reply Zeripper.

I'm actually a little taken back by how in depth your response was and I wanna apologise for my behaviour. RE handing out bans as a means of cooling tempers is actually a decent idea; might help to weed out the more honest players who made a slip up and the outright trolls. I didn't take into consideration the number of trolls you probably have to deal with at all.

Thanks for such a professional response, honestly I better understand what you guys are up against in such a high traffic server, I'm sorry. I do promise not to be disruptive, I understand that you guys just wanna play the game and have fun too, without all the bullshit from trolls.

Regarding the 'no warning' part: it's one of the reasons we keep the rules clear cut and simple "No intentional TKing" and "No Racist Language"

Now we do specify these rules because it's sensible and the done thing. However unless it's a persons first day on the interwebs, the No TKing thing should not really need stating explicitly. Common sense and personal responsibility for your actions and whatnot.

Could we issue warning prior to kicks or bans? Yes, but should we? The admins aren't omniscient or omnipresent. Nor have torn banner seen fit to provide admin tools (or even the protocols so we can make them ourselves). So the admins rely on seeing someone TKing, which since they're playing themselves isn't a given.

So imagine you see two people on the same team fighting. Who do you kick? who started it? You could ask them. They'll inevitably blame each other. Always. Meanwhile that admin would be wasting their time trying to sort out the actions of these people disrupting the server and the game for that admin.

So the fairest and fastest (and therefore least disruptive to the server and to the admin) is just to kick or temp ban both rather than issue warnings. If issuing warnings how do you track this? I might warn someone for TKing, then leave the server. So unless I log every warning I've made so that other admins know a person's been warned or and so forth..
