I've waited a while before making first impressions of BF3 to get used of the game, so....
Overall I think it's pretty good. It's plagued by the usual bugs and server issues that have become par for the course on modern AAA games releases. However even in this regard it's not as bad as I expected, say compared to the launch of BC2. Essentially I have no problems playing, the only issue is occasionally I crash out between rounds or the server drops.
Gameplaywise it needs more polish, possibly due to hoofing it out before the MW3 launch which was technically the midnight just gone (and coincidentally the busiest night we've had so far with the server running till 3am). Overall the game works well: I'm still not keen on the regenerative health, killcam, spawn on squadmates etc. however these can all be turned off to provide BF2 style gameplay. We haven't done this yet as still trying to get the server popular and best not to tinker round with the settings too much.
One bugbear for me is the unlocks, unlike BF2 the unlocks provide a significant advantage. During release I haven't had too much chance to play and when dropping onthe server full of rank 10-30's found myself cut to shreds. Upon picking up a dropped kit I realised that the stabilisers/barrels/grips/better gun made quite a difference. In the end this will balance itself out as everyone eventually unlocks most of the gear, however it's annoying when first playing.
We're still lacking on features I'd like to see. PB screenshot return rates are not very good, although unlike BC2 they do technically work. The rcon protocol is only half there, hindering our admin on the server, no battlerecorder, the squad management and comm rose are appalling and there's no in game comms. However on the positive side these are areas that are supposed to be being looked at.
The maps in general aren't bad. Even the more cagey ones tend to have various routes so it tends not to just a big corridor rape (exception operation metro, which is like an unconsensual gangbang). Other maps have enough space and although many have moaned about close placement of flags, the maps for me haven't beeen a major problem
Overall I think BF3 is a very good game, certainly capable of holding my attention but does need some work in some areas to make it truly great. While patching work is ironing out these areas and they are supposed to be addressed, am still optimistic that we'll be playing for a long while yet
