I give up... I tried 3 different Minecraft mapping softs all with no sucess and no real clues as to why. I'm just not that good at poking other peoples badly made software in the right places!!! Anyone else care to try? For access to the maping data just ask either me or Kermit or Kade possibly.
Good luck!

Oh I've been struggling with this for a while.
I think its more due to the completeness of the data download.

Agreed! Kermit see how you get on if you hit a few brick walls we might just have to summon the 'fiend!!

before considering buying minecraft, I have questions:
1. Do people own certain territories?
2. If yes to the above, can I have a small plot of land as far away from everyone as possible (in order to mitigate havoc that I create)?
3. Are the limits to building size contrained by resources or could one theoretically create a giant phallic skyscraper?
4. How long does one spend scouring for resources? As in are we talking hours, days or weeks to create something large and obscene?
I've not looked at any mapping tools, but I did have a look at the nasty game code a while back. Give us a shout if you need me

I think we may need you on this
Ok in answer to monkey questions
The gmaeworld is essentially infinite
So resources are also infinite
But some are faster to get than others
Also some are more plentiful aswell
Lots > less
Stone, cobblestone marble dirt wood planks sand gravel wool coal iron gold redstone diamond obsidian
Ofc there are more mats but those are most common
U can strike off in any direction and after 2 mins travel ur probinto virgin terratory and ifu don't mark the route clearly u prob never find the same spot fora long while , hence aki's roads and innumerable landmarks
In terms of building stuff
The y axis is infintet while ground level sits on 0 and extends up +64 and down below -64. So in theory one could. Build a massive borg cube 128 blocks wide/high/deep. As long as you chose to dig out a huge pit 64 blocks deep from ground level first

Ive got the mini map working if anyone wants it ill help them

Kermit rocks!!!
Also Monkey if we make you an admin you can be a dirty haxxer and thus ruining the resource acquiring game for yourself but this is all down to personal preference. Personally I try to stick to true and tested unless I'm attempting an insane task like building the games largest underground rail system... oh pooo I may have given the game away! Lol.
There's only a slightly tricky thing about ownership but basically everything's covered in the property rights post

As a geo I find it laughable that there is more marble in the world than there is dirt

I really dont get where K is getting Marble from, I havent seen any... like... anywhere o.O

lol ... he means halfsteps ... his texture pack makes them look like marble chopping blocks

Jan 17 2011, 06:08 PM
Aaaaaaaah, that makes more sense. 6, that explains it, its basically half a block of shiny stone, not actual marble

Also, I would say obsidian is more common than diamond, cus you can actually create obsidian

Ok, can anyone with an up to date map either send it me or please tell me where the hell my new building is? You should be able to see cobblestone onm the map right in the middle of nowhere
Aki
Jan 18 2011, 12:23 AM
Ahh ... here you might have an issue as so far we only have a mini-map implemented ... we have not yet managed to find a soft that maps the whole entire boundary of our world :S guess your lost?

A map you say? Give me 10 minutes.

Clicky Piccy for Biggy

Somebody built a football pitch? :s
Damn... 11 minutes

p.s. bodged together bugfilled sourcecode for map methingy available for perusal or mockery. Version 1.0 bluescreened my pc impressively. It's in C++ and I compiled it in vis studio (but I don't see why it can't be built using make in linux/unix for those of that persuation). I started off in C# then forgot some of the syntax

To those whom the above is gibberish I can just upload a new map whenever anyone wants it updated?

Jan 18 2011, 03:49 AM
is this showing the complete extents of our travels? If so will it show just a tad further?
Aki
Jan 18 2011, 03:51 AM
in fact I know it isnt ... because if you look at the worms map lol ... my underground rail tunnel seems to pop off the top of the map!

Jan 18 2011, 03:52 AM
it's showing as big a thing as I could fit on me screen, as i'm in work and only had access to the fine imaging software of MSpaint. I think the map extends out a bit further in a few directions, but the bit I cut was the main area in rectangularse form.
I assume the map auto-generates when someone goes pushing the boundaries in a direction, hence there's a few area outside of this main rectangle area, but it doesn't look like much has been done there and the sake of scale didn't include these

Im not sure how my brother did it, but he has made a 3d map where it shows almost everything. Ive seen it and it has worked, but for it to extended into further landscape, i aint sure it will be much use.

http://s1107.photobucket.com/albums/h383/d...necraft%20Maps/I'll keep the album up to date ish. But that's probably as detailed a map as is reasonable to produce and upload. Its possible to produce more detailed ones, but it requires considerable amounts of CPU and file size to do so.

I'm just updating my copy of the world files, then I'll produce a new day/night one.

Hmm well I really need night ones too

Jan 31 2011, 08:46 AM
giz a shout if am needed for anything, otherwise assume this is all being sorted.
@kadey: Assume you're doing this already but just in case: if you're ftp'ing to the server with something like filezilla, then downloading only files newer than the existing will significantly speed up compared to redownloading the whole shebang (since it seems the actual map is saved as files in a series of subdirectories.. about 20000 of them

)

Feb 2 2011, 07:50 PM
ta will have a looky at this now
Ok first many many thanks to Kadey for keeping up his rezing of the mappage

but time has come where I desperately need a high res day and night version of the map :| Does anyone know how we can ahieve this without incurring GB of data? I wonder if the server folks would let us host an accessible updated every once in a while map along side our MC data?
Hmm. world logistics are really becoming interesting.
Kadey
Feb 7 2011, 08:53 AM
Worst case scenario - we could distribute the world files and people can use whatever utility they like to actually produce what map they want.
Otherwise, I'll keep investigating better resolution image generation. I'm sure they're out there, we can't be the only ones wanting it surely?

I'm up for the download option... give use the world files in a zip, and we can then each generate the map that suits us. Those who dont want to can stick with the maps you guys have been generating thus far. That 18gig file might be useful after all, if wee can generate it on our own machines...

If anyone is interested I made an image of the whole map.
It's available here, but it's a whopping 7.52Mb:
UtopiaI also have the world up and running on my server, but it's lawless so the landscape is being rearranged a bit, and it can only handle 2-3 people at once before it gets laggy due ot my poor upload. If anyone wants a peak at it though I can hand out the IP and whitelist you, just give me a shout.
