I remember this, did it ages ago. If, 10X (= 9.999999) - X (= .999999) = 9X (= 9) Therefore X = 1 yay for me Apologies, I have a mild perpensity for OCD and therefore must make comment Firstly only .99 RECURRING = 1 The notation should be a dot above the recurring number, but that can't be displayed in the forums, so I'll use the word 'recurring' instead Easy Factorisation: x = .99 recurring 10x = 9.99 recurring 10x - x = 9.99 recurring - x 9x = 9.99 recurring - .99 recurring 9x = 9 x = 1 so .99 recurring = 1 I think the above is straight forward enough to not require an explanation (so shut it 5 ) -------------------- |

swear I did that in my GCSE's (age 14-16 for the yank) 2 years ago. But i wouldnt have been able to work it out though.
