Star Citizen is an entirely crowd-funded game. It was announced on 10th October last year, and since then has raised almost $27million dollars in pledges. Yes, $27million. You can see some funding details on the homepage: https://robertsspaceindustries.com

If anyone has questions, feel free to ask. Also, please be aware that those of us who backed early enough, such as myself, can buy pledge packages more cheaply than new backers. We also get Lifetime Insurance (LTI) on our ships, whereas new backers get limited-time insurance. The good news is that packages are giftable, and can be 'melted down' for store credit. Quite simply, if anyone here wants to pledge, let me know, and I can help you get your package more cheaply, and with LTI. LTI will no longer be offered at all on new purchases after 26th Nov, so if you want to pledge, better to do it sooner rather than later.
