i have corndawgs laptop right now. it won't run the updates. i have tried to manually update it and have tried to let the automatic updating work. it just acts like it is going to update and then just shuts off without actually installing the updates. it says it has around 45 updates that need to be installed. and the damn thing takes forever to start up anyone got any ideas how to fix?

I'll assume you mean Windows updates instead of game updates etc., Most likely culprit for automatic updates failing and manual ones suceeding is firewall or proxy configs.

Not sure if the laptop is XP, Vista, has been recovered using a recovery/repair CD or what service pack it's currently installed to.

Windows updates uses port 443 - make sure that port is open for outbound (not sure about inbound) connections on your firewall.

Also might be worth adding http://*.microsoft.com to trusted zones

oh, sorry. lol. it is windows vista. and it has never had a recovery disk. and one more thing..........its a dell

putting this here so i can keep track of this shit mainly, but any help is good too

i have went through several of the steps the websites say to go through, but none of them help.

i get these FATAL errors from the windowsupdate.log: 80080005, 8007045b, 0x80246008, 0x80070002, 0x80080008, 8024001E, 80240016.
and these WARNING errors: 0x8024000B, 80041003, 800706B5, 0x80248002, 0x80010002, 0x8024400D,

now trying to see what all these mean and which one is causing the problems

Did you do the trusted sites thing?

Open Internet Explorer > Tools >Internet Options > Security > Click 'trusted
sites' icon >Click Sites > uncheck 'require server verification'
Then add following sites :
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com.

If that doesn't work the likely cause of those error codes is missing or corrupted files:

WINHTTP.DLL, WUAUCLT1.DLL, WUAUENG1.DLL, WUAUSERV.DLL, CDM.DLL, WUAPI.DLL,WUPS.DLL,WUCLTUI.DLL, & IUENGINE.DLL

(all in the \windwos\system32 directory)

Try uninsatlling and reinstalling Live Toolbar if you have it installed.

Also has this computer recently had a virus?? If the files in the system32 directory are owned by admin rather than by system this will stop the automatic updates. SEt the the file ownership back to system

If still not working open a command prompt as an administrator, and type the following commands. Press entter after each command:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

^ You may get some errors on the above.

Finally: If all eslse fails you can always runa system file check (SFC) as admin run:

sfc/scannow

However you may need to reinstall some drivers (sounds/graphics etc., after running this)

of those all i could find is:

winhttp.dll, wuaueng.dll, WUAPI.DLL, WUPS.DLL

everything else must be missing

how can i get back these files: WUAUCLT1.DLL, WUAUSERV.DLL, CDM.DLL, WUCLTUI.DLL, & IUENGINE.DLL

tried the command prompt stuff, gave me an error on some of them. even tried copying the files from an XP comp at school to flashdrive and pasting them in the folder on the laptop. nothing has worked yet. may try to get a recovery disc from dell and see if i can just reinstall

Remember when I said if you download the files makes sure they're for the right version of vista??? well .. oh never mind

Like I said you can always use a vista disk and run an SFC /scannow

You'll probably need to reinstall drivers but it'd reset windows to it's correct state

for some damn reason i got confused on which operating system i was trying to fix. was trying to fix vista using xp. that didn't help at all. finally figured that out. then did a system restore and all is well
